Referral Process

Step one:

Phone CoMET Call handling

Please call CoMET on 0300 300 0023. Your call will be answered by one of our call handlers. All our calls are recorded for training and governance purposes.

Step two:

Initial details taken by the call handler

The following initial details will be taken by the call handler:

  • Name of child
  • Child’s date of birth
  • Child’s NHS number
  • Child’s home postcode
  • Child’s weight
  • Location of the Child
  • Referring hospital
  • Name of caller
  • Direct contact number (in case we need to call you back)

Step three:

Conference call with the CoMET Team

The call handler will set up a conference call with the CoMET consultant, registrar and nurse. If any other specialists or clinicians are required this can be facilitated during the call.

Step four:

Advice and Management Plan

The CoMET team will provide advice and agree on a management plan. This may be for advice and support only or for activation of the transport team to transfer

Step five:

Activation

When the decision has been made to accept for transport the team will aim to mobilise within 30 minutes for all acute unplanned transfers. You will be advised of any potential delays to this.

Step six:

Bed location

CoMET will find the appropriate PCCU bed for any emergency transfer. In times of surge bed availability will not affect the response of the team. You will be updated as soon as a bed is found.
